Personal & Professional Red Letters (Part VI) : The Royal Wedding of HRH Prince William Of Windsor, Duke Of Cambridge & HRH Catherine, Duchess Of Cambridge (UpNorth Solo Rendezvous!).

On Friday 29th April 2011, the former Miss Middleton has officially becomes Her Royal Highness Princess William Arthur Philip Louis, Duchess of Cambridge, Countess of Strathearn, Baroness Carrickfergus; the title bestowed upon her by Queen Elizabeth II when she is legally married to Prince William, who is now fondly known as Duke of Cambridge. The wedding occasion has become somewhat an anticipating event due to the fact that Prince William’s mother, Princess/Lady Diana Spencer once was quoted as “Princess of People’s Heart who had a ‘fairytale wedding’” and now people would want to see the son from that union entering a new phase of life.

With the memorable aura of the late Princess Diana, Catherine Middleton now has been touted as the new “English Rose”; possibly replacing the shoes that Princess Diana has left. I myself was an English royalties aficionado ever since I learned about the English Royal families and their European royal cousins are all inflicted with Haemophilia  and I even bought books about the English family history! So, yeah; I am not a new-be fan; been ages in the book!

On whole, it was a cultural-experience to witness the wedding event; even if it was merely through NTV7 at the idyllic Serendah, Hulu Selangor! A fascinating event with a lot of rituals and protocols to be mesmerized with; the processions, the music, the attires, the crowd and the finale custom – The Balcony Scene where the couple faced the crowd and shared their kiss in front of millions of people. Splendid! And Catherine embodies the regal elegance just like the late Princess Grace Kelly when she wore the beautiful Alexander McQueen‘s dress (created by Sarah Burton, McQueen’s creative director; McQueen killed himself last year). Breathtaking, I say. Happy newly wed to both Duke of Cambridge & Duchess of Cambridge!

It’s Workers Day this Sunday (1 May), so on Monday it’s Public Holiday. So, I took the opportunity to go back to Jitra, a plan I’ve been putting on halt for the least 2 weeks. Today, pushed off from idyllic Serendah, Hulu Selangor circa 7.40 A.M. and I took the old road to Tanjung Malim- just to save cost from highway toll (now I understand when people say that when you have cars, your expenses sky-rocketing in comparison to the time when you have none!); so off to Northern region; just me and my fuschia-color Myvi, Dagny!

There were quite a lot of vehicles streaming along the North-South PLUS highway but still it was a smooth flow. But just about to reach Bukit Tambun and Juru, the traffic has become somewhat congested and the line was so long! I was wondering what was happening at the upfront as the traffic was moving slowly; to my astonishment, there were 5 cars all wrecked up in an accident and smithereens of glasses scattered on the road *Shudder!*

But overall, Alhamdulillah it was a good journey and I’ve learned that having a good sleep or rest prior to the day before travelling alone is a must, or one who is driving will be in peril danger! Hehehe

Personal & Professional Red Letters (Part V) : The Plight Of A Strong Moslem Woman (80,627 Views).

Being a teacher is all being the manoeuvrer of all trades; a Malay maxim describes teacher as a candle that burns itself; melting the wax just to shine up the way around. We are teachers on papers; realistically, we are parents, babysitters & guards (towards the children); clerks (documentation and paperwork); actors, singers & clowns (during lessons so that the process of learning-and-teaching runs smoothly and enjoyable); traffic policemen (during events or election where schools are used); optometrists & nutritionists (class teachers are to measure weights & heights of pupils; free food for poor pupils) ; interior designers (for events involving VIPS, annual affairs, etc) and the list goes on. Regardless of those, I love my career now. And the core of my job which is to impart and convey knowledge to the budding generation of Malaysians.

My life now is a far cry from the glamorous nature of corporate life I was first introduced when I started jumping into the working phase as a banker. A low-key career as a teacher; but I have the most satisfying job professionally and personally; which is in sync with my nature of upbringing- simplicity. I get to educate the youngsters and this really give satisfaction as a way for me to give back as a token of gratitude towards whatever bless God SWT has bestowed upon me. Besides, life as a teacher demands a great deal to be an authentic socialite. Not like corporate mooshies I used to be exposed towards to – hotels dining and kissing-asses-for-financing-or-tender-procurement or brushing shoulders with CEOs or VIPs; this is to mingle with lay men and to brush up the etiquette when dealing with illiterate people. I get to see humanitarian side of the world when I become a teacher and my empathic radar has become very sensitive; especially seeing people around me who are less fortunate and downtrodden. 

Yesterday, I visited Kak Rahimah, an Ustazah in my school who happened to be my neighbour-at-Teacher’s Room. She was warded and had minor surgery on her leg due to diabetes. For me, I was amazed and at the same time humbled and empathic to see her struggling with God’s Test; her husband became blind approximately 2 years ago and she becomes the main catalyst for her family. A woman who was full with doubts on how to manoeuvre the life when her man became blind emerged as a strong woman who fought the odds and with faith as her guidance. To add salt to the wounds, bureaucracy shenanigan in Selayang Hospital (which by the way is well-known for its notorious reputation as fussy, slow and ineffective hospitality service!) when she badly needed to be treated due to her diabetes was really patience-testing.

Imagine, she went to the hospital around 11.35 A.M.; around 2 P.M. only she was asked to be X-rayed; 4 P.M. blood was taken; AND THEN, SHE HAD TO WAIT ANOTHER 4 HOURS BECAUSE THE NURSE DIDN’T NOTICE HER EXISTENCE- ONLY WHEN SHE CRIED IN PAIN THAT THE NURSE TOOK HER SECOND BLOOD PRESSURE READING!!!  She didn’t take any meals except for the breakfast she had early in the morning; she then decided to go back around 11.30 P.M. but just about she was to go out, the nurse called out for her to take another test!! But she had to refuse because she was so weak at that time! Imagine waiting 3 hours for nothing and when you decided to go back then only the persons in particular called you up???

I was so angry and sad to hear this story! I just hope that Kak Im (affectionate call for Kak Rahimah) will gather strength to overcome these tests from Allah SWT, Insya Allah.

Apart from that, there are also colleagues who are being tested by Allah SWT; some are tested with physical ailments; some are tested with mystical supernatural ailments; Masya Allah.  It’s delicate to peruse everything here but all I want to say is that, I hope for the best for people around me. Insya Allah, God SWT will never desert us.

Personal & Professional Red Letters (Part IV) : Indonesian-Cuisine @ “Wong Solo”, Bangi & Honouring 3 Historical ‘Srikandi’ (Tun Kudu, Tun Fatimah & Tun Teja).

This weekend is slated for laziness! Yeay! There is no school commitment; I just slept the whole day on the Friday. Initially, I planned to go back to Jitra, Kedah; apart from to experience the adventure of driving alone back to upnorth, I also would want to send cloth to my favourite tailor (“Kedai Singapora Tailor”) at Jitra, whose hand-sewn clothes are really good and comfortable! But anyway, I was feeling so lethargic and sleepy that I decided to revert to my Plan B; that is to go to Putrajaya and then sending the cloth to a tailor in Bangi (which Kakak already guaranteed that she knew one).

I went to Putrajaya on Saturday and arrived at Putrajaya around noon. So happened that Kakak went to her driving school. Around 2.30 P.M., Abang Zam, Rifqi and I went to METRO Academy to fetch Kakak and then off we went for an Indonesian cuisine restaurant called “Wong Solo” at Bandar Baru Bangi (where else? The place has become my domain; Oh, wait! I did live there for 9 months during my early banking tenure!). Too bad I didn’t bring my camera to snap the pictures! It was sumptuous delicacies (or maybe because I was too hungry, I don’t know!); either way, it was finger-licking good.

Anyway, I was watching “XX Ray 2″ in Tv3 (one of Malaysian first science fiction flicks) that I suddenly feel curious about the famous Malay women in Malay Archipelago’s history. I always hear their names; but to really find about them has never really occurred to my mind. Therefore, I decided to Google about them and I would like to share some of the facts in this blog. The women are the 3 Tuns; Tun Kudu, Tun Fatimah & Tun Teja. I am history freak, I know!

Tun Kudu was the daughter of Bendahara Seri Wak Raja (II) who killed himself by drinking poison because he thought the Sultan was angry at him. The Sultan then felt remorse and wedded Tun Kudu who happened to be the sister of famous Bendahara Tun Perak, the man who catapulted Malacca into a world-renowned entrepot trading centre. Tun Ali, the existing Bendahara was an old widower and a prominent man for the Tamil-Moslem community of that time. He was besotted with Tun Kudu’s beauty who at that time happened to be the consort of Sultan Muzaffar Syah. His influence was so ever great that Sultan was worried that the clash between Tamil-Moslem and Malay community would get worsen. Since Tun Perak was a prominent figure to the Malays and was the brother of Tun Kudu, Sultan decided to divorced Tun Kudu, his consort to be wedded with the old Tun Ali. Tun Kudu agreed and the solemnization of the marriage managed to seal peace amongst the Malaccan community!

Tun Fatimah was one of the most famous heroine in Malay Archipelago history. She was Tun Kudu’s granddaughter from her son Tun Mutahir. Her family was executed by Sultan (again? yeah, I know. It’s like “What?” right? Huh!) – Sultan Mahmud Syah (the last Malaccan Sultan) due to lies and slanders. Tun Fatimah who happened to be a beautiful Tamil-Moslem woman was already a married woman to Tun Ali when Sultan Mahmud Syah first saw her face and fell in love with her. Fuelled by his passion towards Tun Fatimah as well as slanders by hearsays, Sultan Mahmud executed Tun Fatimah’s husband and all her brothers! The Sultan then wedded her; at first she refused but then a brilliant woman she was; she used her new supreme status to revenge against the slanderers (Si Kitul & Raja Mendeliar) and even to Sultan by persuading Sultan to kill his own son Raja Ahmad on the token of that Raja Ahmad was planning a rebellion against Sultan Mahmud Syah! Tun Fatimah then asked her own son, Raden Puteh (later renamed Sultan Alauddin Riayat Syah; the founder of Johore-Riau Sultanate) to be named heir to the throne. According to a website I read in Internet, Tun Fatimah NEVER smiled; she aborted her pregnancy 3 times and only agreed to pregnant Sultan’s child when she was promised that Sultan would bestow sovereignty to her child. Wow, talked about revenge of a woman!

Tun Teja Ratna Benggala was also one of the most famous women in Malaccan history. She was the daughter of Pahang Bendahara (Prime Minister); kidnapped by Hang Tuah for Sultan Mahmud Syah. Tun Teja who was a beautiful damsel was betrothed to Megat Panji Alam, a prince from Terengganu. She was given some enchanted sweets and thus, followed Hang Tuah to Malacca. Sultan Mahmud Syah (again!) wedded Tun Teja and she lived with him until Portuguese attacked Malacca in 1511. They moved from Malacca and it was said that Tun Teja fell sick and died at Merlimau where her mausoleum still laid rest to these days.

Personal & Professional Red Letters (Part III) : Disciplining Prefects In Camp | The English Luncheon | Facades & Feathers In Kuala Lumpur (Ampang Hill Lookout Point, Malaysia Tourism Centre, Saloma Bistro, “Tugu Negara”, ASEAN Sculptures Garden, Public Service Library & KL Bird Park)!

Shahrill Ramli, as a teacher is heading a very hectic professional schedule now; as well as Shahrill Ramli, as a 27 years-old childlike devoting personal calendar to the fullest! Last weekend dated 16th April and 17th April was quite hectic with red-letters events; both for professional as well personal slots.

On Saturday, dated 16th April 2011, the school simultaneously organized 2 events on the very same day. Hmmm…I won’t be saying anything about the ‘coincidence’ which I think was actually avoidable but perhaps due to mandatory ‘aspiration’, nobody has the right to object although obviously it seemed ridiculous to conduct 2 internal events; as if like about were trying to outwit each others! Nonetheless, if that was the best, we all should obliged to that. Anyway, enough with the blabbering!

The school conducted ‘Latihan Dalam Perkhidmatan’ (LADAP) slot focusing on “Pentaksiran Berasaskan Sekolah” which basically centres on how the new school-based assessment will be implemented and how the oral assessment as well as PEKA (Science Assessment) will be evaluated in accordance to standardized modules and procedures. At the same time, prefects’ camp was organized by the Discipline Board & Counselling Society as well for prefects, librarians and peer mentors. As the Year 5 Discipline Teacher, it was my responsibility to be there and supervised the pupils as well.

While participating the Prefects’ Camp; took a break and make a dash at TESCO Rawang for English Panel luncheon at a Pakistani-Arabian cuisine restaurant called “Kabul” with Zuraini. The delicacies were sumptuous lot and I guess every penny spent were worthy! Fingers-licking good y’all. Viva English Panel and to the Head of English Panel Kak Wahida for lavishing us with that treat.

After that, I went back to school with Zuraini who also happened to be a discipline teacher, thus had to be with the prefects at the Prefects’ Camp. The camp called off around 4.15 P.M.

Saloma Bistro.

That night, went to Ampang Hill Lookout Point to witness the magnificent breath-taking night scenery of Kuala Lumpur from hilltop view. Subhanallah! It was so beautiful seeing the electrical lights shining amidst the darkness like tiny magical fireflies; with 2 cones-pillars of course (KLCC Twin Towers) and KL Tower clearly visible from afar.

Then, went to the heart of KL for night rendezvouses at Saloma Bistro and Malaysia Tourism Centre (MaTic) which are at the side of the famous nightclub The Zouk. Saloma Bistro was an elegant place to chill and relax your mind in a luxurious style while just at the side of it is The MaTic which is an opposite to the style of Saloma Bistro! A bazaar is erected at field in MaTic compound and there was a karaoke stage and few stalls aligned. It felt as if you were in two worlds; Saloma Bistro with its elegance and MaTic with its down town market commoners. But both make me feel good all the way! (,”) Called the night off at 12.15 A.M. and back to Serendah, Hulu Selangor.

On Sunday afternoon, another round to Kuala Lumpur. This time, simply focused at The Lake Garden Complex; National Monument or “Tugu Negara”, the world largest bronze grouping monument. The National monument was erected to commemorate the sacrifices of Malaysians in The World War II particularly during Japanese Occupation. It was built in 1963 to replace the first National Monument which is a cenotaph (still exist till today). Seeing the Tugu Negara really evoked an over-whelming emotion to me; I imagined how our forefathers fought the colonials and were tortured to death! Unfortunately, what our younger generations do now? Disregard the social contract agreed years ago and perceived the sacrifices made by forefathers as mediocre. What a shame!

Next, proceed to the ASEAN Scuplture Garden just around the corner. It is a garden assembling a few sculptures built by ASEAN sculptors. Abstract architecture all around and a good place for arts lovers.

Lake Garden or Taman Tasik Perdana boasts a lot of tourists attraction which are located near to each others. After ASEAN Scuplture Garden, went to Public Service Library (‘Perpustakaan Perkhidmatan Awam’) which houses thousands of documentation on the history of public service in Malaysia. It is a very informative place and for a historical freak, I love the library or the museum! Awesome!

The last destination was Kuala Lumpur’s Bird Park. It has been dubbed as the world’s largest free-walk aviary. It was built in 19991 and nest a lot of birds from Malaysia and abroad. It is segregated into several sections in accordance to the various avians. It also has an incubation room or a nursery where one can witness the incubation and hatching process. The beautiful birds with myriads of colours were definitely bedazzling! Subhanallah!

Personal & Professional Red Letters (Part II) : Making An English Out Of Science (Ministry’s Policy).

With the now-defunct PPSMI (Science & Mathematics Teaching & Learning in English) declared as unsuccessful, Malaysian Government has decided to introduce a new education policy called “Memartabatkan Bahasa Malaysia, Memperkukuh Bahasa Inggeris” (affectionately known as MBMMBI). And with that new policy kicking off, Government decided that it will also be a ‘brilliant’ idea to give intensive and rigorous course to the teachers who are teaching English but majoring in other subject; meaning to say, English isn’t their option; like myself, I am a Science option because I was given maximum training on how to teach science in schools; and also minoring in English- the weightage of training is secondary to Science. But apparently it seems that Government don’t pay heed to the “minoring course” (although Government was the one who established that for our training); so I have to attend a course.

So happened that I saw my friend Salim’s name also included in the list (he was from SK Kampung Soeharto) so without further a due, made a pack with him to go to the course together. Salim would be staying with me in Serendah and I’ll be driving my Dagny to the course venue in KL since Salim wasn’t really good with KL roads. So for the past 3 days, I was the chauffeur back and fro from Serendah, Hulu Selangor to Institut Pendidikan Guru Malaysia Kampus Bahasa Antarabangsa at Lembah Pantai, KL; woke up as early as 5.00 A.M. to push off from Serendah circa 6.10 A.M just to avoid the immense traffic jam; along side Kak Masnah, my SK Serendah’s colleague and Salim!

We were told that the course will be divided into 4 phases and we were attending the 1 st course which would be stressing on Listening & Speaking skills; the rest will be followed in the upcoming months! We were clustered according to the district (mine was Hulu Selangor) and we were merged with teachers from Sabak Bernam’s district.

On whole, I love the activities conducted which comprised Public Speaking, Idiomatic Expressions, etc. And furthermore, it involved a lot of group work and I love doing oral activities! First, I named my group as “Spirit Of Kak Limah” (Hantu Kak Limah) which of course was inspired by a pupil of mine who asked me if he could name his group “Ghost of Kak Limah” during in one of activities I conducted in my class! Hahahaha! But then, the group was defunct by the facilitator and we were dispersed into new group; again, I contributed to the name of group- “Waka Waka!”

Initially, I had planned a lengthy topic on “How I Become A Teacher” for my public speaking (Refer to my August 2008 entry! You’ll die of shocking!) but on the eleventh hour, it was said that the time was merely 3 minutes! So I scrapped the whole thing and went impromptu on “Myself”! Hahaha! The lecturers said I’ve done great job (to my surprise!) and commented that I could speak well (I was a bit conscious about my grammar; or maybe NOT! Hhaha!). Of course, my English isn’t flawless but it’s nice to able to show that even non-optionist English teachers are not bad at all; and to certain extend perhaps outwitting those who are certified. Either way, it was good to have new knowledge to expand my own horizon and perspective on Teaching English.

I enjoyed the course because I had opportunity to meet new friends and expand my networking. It is also a down-to-earth experience to meet veteran teachers and shared their pleas and plights during Reflection sessions. Although for the nest phase, I am sure it will be tedious, I will try to make the best of it; like what my ex-IPDA lecturer texted me “Just try to make the best of it”. Well, life is Joie de Vivre, isn’t it? (,”)

Personal & Professional Red Letters (Part I) : Nawal’s “1001 Arabian Nights” Birthday Bash @ Malaysian National Zoo!

April proves to be a will-be hectic schedule; both for personal and professional endeavours. Every weekend and weekdays, there are special slots happening and I guess it’s kinda cool sometime to be indulged with the hectic-ness! Anyway, on Saturday April 9th 2011, went to National Zoo for Nawal’s birthday bash- with the theme “1001 Arabian Nights.” So yeah, you could expect that the costumes, the music and even the cuisines were all Arabian flavours (,”).

The plan was that I was going to fetch Kat at her residence in Jalan Ipoh and then straightly went to party. Well, since I was driving into KL, I thought the traffic must be congested with vehicles; thus decided to push off earlier from Serendah; well, as early as 4.30 P.M.! Arrived at Kat’s place around 5.20 P.M. (only because I took wrong junctions); then pushed off to Hulu Kelang. We were like so damn early and decided to kill time at McDonald’s but time was just so slow! We arrived early at the Zoo but only to find that Nawal was lamenting us for coming too early! Hahaha..so decided to kill time went to Petronas nearby; performing Maghrib prayer and off went to the Zoo!

The Gate 7 entrance was decorated with few balloons to welcome the guests. A few workers were busy grilling barbecued chickens and some of  Nawal’s relatives were welcoming guests; donning their own Arabian Night costumes! Nawal took the service of Kuzie Catering which; according to Kat is a celebrated Catering, boasting a number of clintele- including Dato’ Siti Nurhaliza and many VIPs. Anyway, Arabian music was all in the air and it was so ever exciting!

The guests were a little bit late; and we were the most punctual ones! Perhaps being Malaysians, everyone was taking time dilly-dallying. Either way, it was a great turnout with few old mates, familiar faces and new acquaintances. Nawal was emceeing the birthday bash along side the actor, Arja Lee and they were a great partner in emceeing. The guests were lavished with fun activities like Musical Chairs; Quizzes & Hoop-La-Hoop; Arabian Costumes modelling & interval singing performances! I partook the musical chairs, quizzes and hoop-la-hoop and they were fun activities! Hahahaa, Kat emerged as the winner (she ousted me with her firmer buttock! Grrrr! Hahaha) in Musical Chair and scored a Burberry perfume ( Was it The Beat? My Burberry Fantasy; apart of the trench coat!). Congrats, chica!

The cuisine was a sumptuous one too- courtesy of the celebrated Kuzie Catering, I supposed. The Briyani was awesome and we enjoyed that immensely!

After the cake-cutting ceremony, there was a brief after-party where everyone graced the dance floor. It was a nice ‘let hair down’ moment especially for Kat! Hahahaha! On whole, great Arabian Night, Nawal! Happy birthday dear!

The Canaries Shun Down The KLCC : Malaysian Super League Football @ Cheras Stadium.

Yes, I am a pure Penangite. Originally born and bred in the Island of Pearl Of The Orient. Had my kindergarten, primary, secondary and tertiary educations there with a lot of nostalgic and distinctive chapters in my own canvas of life. BUT, my mother is an original Kedahan; with ancestral lineage from Southern Thailand who then dwelt in Jitra. We moved to Kedah during my 1st year in USM and then I completed my 1 year KPLI in Jitra, itself after quitted The Bank. So, the Kedah heritage runs in my blood and I regard myself as one of a Kedahan too.

My brother-in-law, Abg Zam was a Kedahan-ancestral too. But his family moved to Pahang when he was still a boy; nonetheless, the Kedahan spirit still lies strongly. He is an avid supporter of Kedah football team; hence, always find opportunity to catch football match involving Kedah in this Central Region. A match between Kedah and Kuala Lumpur for the Super League is something not to be missed; so we went to Cheras Stadium along with my 4 years old nephew, Rifqi!

As expected, there were a lot of Kedahan thronging in the stadium; leaving Kuala Lumpur supporters mainly consisting of their Ultra Team (each state football team is said to have hardcore fanatic who labelled themselves as Ultra; they have the most flamboyant spirits; they chant and sing for their respective teams!) whereas Kedah was full with entourages of mothers, children, the men and of the course, the Canaries Knight Ultra!

I know I’ve grown some cherubic fat but this one, I was swallowing sausages. So, yeah, my cheek  looked big and roundish (,”)

On whole, Kedah team sadly played not to its fullest skill. The game was a bit frustrating with Kuala Lumpur Team kept pushing the Kedah goals over and over BUT luckily, prove to no avail! The Kedah supporters being Cliche Northern People were very angry with our performance that provocations and jeering were thrown to the Kedah players because of their bad performance (me, included!). I guess the provocations did justice to the players because at the eleventh hour (around 89 minutes); Kedah managed to score a goal! *Phew!* That was a close call for the Kedah Team. You never know what the hardcore fans would have done if they were to fail! (,”)
