Racism means to segregate (separating) people from the color of their skins. People are defined through their ethnicity and not the skin-deep. We often wonder whether or not in this epoch-making world nowadays if this antiquated philosophy is still being practicized?! The naked truth never sounds so ethereal : It still happens.
Above all, i would like express my gratitude for being a Malaysian. Malaysia is the only place in the whole wide world where you can find multiracial society live harmoniously. Of course there are some trivial matters arisen everynows and thens but Kudos to the government for giving out warnings to people who tried to play with racial issues. I have to say i’m PROUD for being a Malaysian. I have lots of chinese, indians,Kadazans, Ibans, and many more friends and acquaintances. You can’t find anwhere like this; even in America who is always highly proclaimed as teh “Land of Freedom & Opportunity” (where racial issues are contradictoryly are endless and prejudices against each other is continous!). There are still white people out there who refuse to befriend with black people while the colored people (asians, hispanics, blacks, native americans) are thought ought to be treated second-class!
I have nothing against white people and i know there are some who are not being ‘white supremecist’ but i just can’t help my feeling to write about this stuff because it’s a rampant issue and no one really talks about this. I often wonder why white people think they are superior to others? Is it because :-
- of the pale-zombie white skin they have or the blond hairs?-Puhleeze! That’s NOT beautiful and not to say looks so-totally freaking zombie!
- or they think they are so civilised (White Mens’ Burden) and ought to teach us the savages how to lead our life? – If we look back through the calendar of history, the Asian and Arabian Empires had long reigned modernisation in time where the Western’s Middle Ages took place. Who is the savages now? HUH!
I don’t know about you all and how you perceive the world; but what I know is that I don’t judge the person from his/her skin color. I like communicating with other people from different ethnicities to learn new cultures and things. I guess that’s why most of my bestfriends were and are from different races. Not that I planned but it just happens!
During Standard 1-3, my bestfriend was Chin Hooi (who happened to be this brightest kid and great artist). I can’t remembered how I was close with him but we just did. I cried when I knew he was going to move to Seberang Jaya ‘coz his single mom bought a new house there. In my Standard 5-6, I was close with Kevin Ng, a friend who was very skillful in football playing and prefect. I remembered we were so happy that we got 4A’s in UPSR and congratulated each other… BUT, we had a fight during my Form 1 days and that was the history for everything. It was actually small matter but I simplyI stormed off~ I could have just apologised but I didn’t because I was an ego-maniac. For 5 years we were distant to each other (and till now) and I always regret with all of these things I have done. =(
Nontheless, I found bestfriend in Tamilchelvan, my bestpal in Penang Free School. We always talk about our respectives’ religions and beliefs , yet still respect each other’s faith in respectives’ religion. i have learnt a lot of Hinduisme and vice versa. In my USM years, i found great companions with my two bestfriends, Efisius and Kathleen @ The Doncha Club. We always discuss about mutual beliefs in our religions (Islam & Christianity) and perceptions to clarify misconceptions YET still respect the sanctity of each others’ beliefs. We don’t go out of the line besmirching mutual religions.. Instead we discuss them diplomatically. As a Moslem, I laways try to potray the real essence of Moslem and Islam which is “There IS NO FORCING IN ISLAM” and I also believe that as a Moslem who befriend other people from different religion could somehow illustrate the truth image of Islam : which always encourage Moslems to befriend people regardless their faiths or beliefs. Islam always typically being potrays as the essence of extremism – which is NOT TRUE. As a diplomatic religion, Islam encourages Moslems to partake in any theocratical disccusion and no enforcement is necessary. And that is what I’m trying to potray.
On whole, i believe that we ought to have mutual RESPECT in each others’ beliefs and religions. In that way, we can live harmoniously…ever after, Insya Allah =)
P/S : of course i have a lot of Malay bestfriends and you guys know who you are. =)
