Throughout last week commencing on 5th of July 2010 until 9th July 2010, SK Serendah organized the compulsory Anti-Drugs Week campaign to create awareness of the negative impacts of drug abuse to men. As one of the committee entrusted to organize the event, it was a valuable experience gained in the canvas of life as a teacher.
The launching ceremony was conducted in the Monday Morning Assembly with “Boria” performance as the overture of the event. It was nice seeing familiar faces of my pupils actively partaking in school activities and donned their performance colors exuberantly! The ceremony was launched by a PPD (Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah) Hulu Selangor’s officer and Anti-Drugs Oath was read by one of the Peer Facilitator (Pembimbing Rakan Sebaya). There were a lot of activities conducted throughout the week such as coloring contest for Year 1-Year 5; Poem Recital (Year 4 & Year 5) and a talk by an officer from Agensi Anti-Dadah Kebangsaan (AADK).
I was put in charge of conducting the Poem Recital segment. Since the announcement was made 2 weeks prior to the Anti-Drugs Week, immense reception were given by pupils who were interested to partake the event. Altogether, there were approximately 40++ pupils who were interested; but at the eleventh hour, Ustaz Tarmizi who happened to be the head of the event told me that Year 6 pupils were to be excluded since they were to be focused on UPSR Gerak Gempur module. A preliminary stage was conducted to cut down the number of contestants and I had to say throughout the process, I was feeling like one of the American Idol judges! I could witness multifaceted personalities of pupils entering the contest. Some were very determine; some were just simply dilly-dallying. After 3 days of conducting preliminary stages, 21 pupils were selected for the Final Round.
On the 6th of July, the Final Round was held with 3 Malay Language teachers (Puan Kartini, Puan Sarbibie & Puan Norhayati) as the judges. I had to say that the performances were excellent. Who knew that a small town such as Serendah has fresh talents like them? The winner of the Year 5 Poem Recital was so immersed with her rendition of the poem that she cried throughout the recital; the ability to cry is precious! I have to say, I was so blown away by that; even during my schooling days where I was an active participants in poem recital, I couldn’t have done that!
Anyway, as for recap too; yesterday morning (12th July 2010) was the finale of World Cup 2010 between Spain and Netherlands. It was a nice game although I have to say it was marred by the dramatic referee who kept giving out yellow cards (could it be more than 15 cards???) and the pretentious acts from both telenovela players; Spain and Netherlands! The game was clean cut in the 90 minutes and exceeded to the 2 parts of 30 minutes; when suddenly Andreas Iniesta scored unexpected goal into Netherlands’! All I can say, it was nice to wake up early in the morning albeit with puffy eyes and spinning head. After all, World Cup is once in 4 years, aite? Although I am no fanatic, but I enjoy watching it occasionally when I have nothing to watch and anticipating it! I guess, Las Rojas won this time. And we will be missing Shakira’s “Waka Waka” theme song, I am sure!(,”)
