I was teaching Science to 4 Flexible today (after teaching 4 Dynamic – straight TWO HOURS) when suddenly I saw a Year 6 boy wondering at the space between Block A & Computer Lab which happened to be just at the side of 4 Flexible. I sort of barked at him/reprimanded/ asked him with “high-commanding voice” to not linger around – true to my Discipline Teacher essence. The boy recoiled but suddenly 5 minutes later I saw Kak Rasida & Kak Sarbibie standing at the same spot and called me out when they saw me from afar.

I went out to them and they asked me to see up on the sky. Behold! The sun exhibited a unique vast Halo around it! Subhanallah! You know, Halo has always a great sentiment in my life as my favourite song is “Halo” from Beyonce and it also has some holy connotation to it as well; a faith and piety accentuations closely; burning as beacon throughout in my life.

Anyway, apart from the awe; everyone was burning with flabbergasted questions; WHAT IS THE PHENOMENON? And of course being Science teachers, it’s natural that pupils and teachers would resort to me and my Science colleagues for explanations! So, I googled and found a piece of article in Wikipedia on 22° Halo. According to the article, it happens because sunlight is refracted from hexagonal ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. Now, because of the haxagonal shape, the arc-like dispersion of ray happened.

Now, a friend of mine, my KPLI monitor, Aidi rose a very rationale inquiry when I posted about this in FB (for the sake of the pupils to gain Scientific knowledge as well as for ordinary people out there in my list) :
“How come there is ice crystal in tropical and Equatorial area?”
I was bewildered by that comment as well; until I saw a sentence in Wikipedia saying “Like other ice halos, 22° halos appear when the sky is covered by thin cirrus clouds containing the ice crystals that cause the phenomenon”. Therefore from this intonation, I would suggest that hexagonal the ice crystals in question are perhaps smithereens from the Cirrus Clouds. Well, I could be wrong. Anyway, this was an interesting topic; so I had chat with Kak Lin & Kak Airin. On the other hand, they have their own findings on the phenomenon. They favoured that this was due to a phenomenon called “Badai Matahari”. Apparently, it happens due to extraordinary explosion of nuclear energy in the sun (it usually happens but within ordinary rates). The discussion was topped-in with the recent prediction of Armageddon by various quotes and predictions or soothsaying, Nauzubillah! An innocent question asked by Kak Airin’s son was both ticklish YET quite alarming after she explained to him about the scientific occurrence pertaining the Sun :
“Mama, I thought the door to Akhirat (The AfterLife/Armageddon has been opened….”
I know some people would want to laugh, ridicule or jump into blind conclusion but do take this from positive side. I guess it’s God’s signs for us to warn us about The Greatness. Behold, for the power of God is immensely powerful. Subhanallah. A gentle reminder to all of us, including myself.
Extraordinary explosion of nuclear energy in the sun.
Whatever the theories or opinions, I think it’s a healthy discussion involving the school about Science. At least, it shows to the community and the pupils as well about how Science operates and the interesting facts pertaining Science. Science is fun! (,”)
