Today is the last day for Muslims to be able to recite “Takbir” for the Aidiladha as it is the third day of Tasyrik Days (11th, 12th and 13th Zulhijjah). On the Tasyrik Days, Muslims are prohibited to fast. In these very days, Muslims performing pilgrim will be throwing stones at three spots – Jamratul Ula, Jamratul Wusta & Jamratul Aqabah.
I have touched about the history of Sacrificial Deeds that inspired Aidiladha in my previous entry dated 6th December 2008 (https://undomiel84.wordpress.com/2008/12/06/sacrificial-deed-of-abraham-ibrahim-as-selamat-menyambut-aidil-adha/) & also 7th November 2011 (https://undomiel84.wordpress.com/2011/11/07/aidiladha-emblem-of-sacred-sacrifices-of-prophet-ibrahim-a-s-abraham-prophet-ismail-a-s-ishmael-part-i-aidiladha-jitra-kedah/). But I think I have yet to tell about the historical piece of Prophet Ibrahim A.S (Abraham) & Prophet Ismail A.S. (Ishmael).
Left alone in the desert.
Muslims and Jews have different perceptions about Prophet Ismail A.S. (Ishmael). Muslims perceive Ishmael as the true descendant of Abraham as he was the first born and the forefather of the Arabs while the Jews claim that Prophet Ishak A.S. (Isaac) was the true descendant although he was the second born because God had instructed that. Ishamael was born from Hagar (Siti Hajar), the Egyptian handmaiden when Sarah (Siti Sarah), the first wife couldn’t bear a child. By ALLAH SWT’s grace, when the old Sarah was told that she too would be having a child, she was laughing so much for the “glad tiding”; hence the name “Ishak” derived from the word ‘laughter’ (if I am not mistaken). Anyway, with both women now having sons, jealousy arose and Sarah asked Abraham to cast Hagar away with Ishmael.
From the hills of Safa to Marwah, Hagar ran for the water to quench the thirst of her son, Ishmael.
The modern alleyway created to bridge between the two hills so that Muslims can execute Ibadah with comfort ( We don’t have to run back and from like Hagar with sweat and under scorching sun, anymore!)
ALLAH SWT then sent a revelation to Abraham to send Hagar and Ishmael away (there’s always bless in disguise) to avoid issues. Reluctantly, Abraham traveled with Hagar along with Ishmael and arrived at the desert which one day would become Hijaz; the place where Makkah was to be built. He left them there with a few sustenance and sadly walked away and promised to come back. He was sad and prayed to ALLAH SWT :-
Which means (more or less; I translated this myself from Bahasa Melayu version) :
(O God! I have placed some parts of my seeds in this valley (Makkah) which is barren. O our God, place them in place that they will be able to pray and harmonize it with good deeds. Therefore, make the hearts of some people soften when they see them (Hagar & Ishmael) and bless them with food from various fruits and plants, so that they will be grateful)
Hagar was devastated when the food finished. With the scorching hot of desert and no water to be found, her heart was scared for her young one, Ishmael. She tried to search for water; went back and fro from two hills of Sofa & Marwah seeking for any water or anyone that can help although she knew the source was scarce – how could there be water or anyone in this desert?
The Well of Zam-Zam; ages ago.
Dissection diagram on The Well of Zamzam.
But by Allah SWT’s grace, at her 7th attempts from Sofa to Marwah, Ishmael which was said to be still a baby stamped the desert with his tiny feet while Hagar was cradling him; and lo! – a fountain came out with soft whisper of “Zam Zam”; some version said it derived from the words “zomk zomk” cried by Hagar which means “stop! stop!” when she was trying to confine the overshooting fountain! Alhamdulillah, both mother and son were able to quench their thirst. The rest was history; where a few travellers stopped by and settled down there with their caravans and soon brought families there; and it was the original history of Hijaz where Makkah would be built later.
A mother’s unconditional love.
This bit of historical piece is a true sacrifice; to uphold ALLAH SWT’s commands. I remembered a song from M. Nasir called “Raikan Cinta” (Celebrating The Love) – I even bought his cassette in 2001; Hahaha! – which tells the story about Hagar’s love to Ishmael. That’s a true sacrifice! This is the lyrics and I translate it myself (loose translation). Deep meaning!
“Perahuku menghala ke hulu kuala jua kusua, jua kusua
Kau lihat aku, aku pula lihat dia samakah kita ?
Ke sana ke sini lari-lari kecil
Bagai Siti Hajar mencari air
Terpancur sinar di kering pasir
Bekas hentakan kudus kaki Ismail
Mari mawarku raikan cinta
Tanpa cintaNya kita tiada
Mawar cinta mawarku abadi
Cinta pemilik segala jadi…”
My boat goes back and fro,
I look at you and you look at me, are we the same?
Go back and fro running with small baby steps
Like Hagar searching for water
There shoot a ray of light from a desert
From the stamping of Ishmael’s baby feet.
