I’ve said and done it for like thousand times! And I did it again! Hahaha… I’ve always been a spontaneous person and I do impulsive things. Do what I do and when as I please. Planned rules and schedules sometimes can be turn-off. I like to be free and relaxed! Hahahaa! Anyway, I made a spur-of-the-moment decision to travel to Penang this weekend!
Courtesy of Google Image. Don’t sue me! My alma mater, Penang Free School. The Grand Old Lady still looks magnificent, after all these years.
Facebook has become a great tool in connecting long-lost friends or meeting new acquaintances, these days. For the past a week ago, my Penang Free ex-schoolamate, Praveen who is now residing in Melbourne, Australia has been planning to do a casual reunion at McDonald’s Green Lane; which happens to be located beside our beloved alma mater, Penang Free School. Since I was blocked from sending FB messages by Facebook (damn Mark Zuckerberg!) to non-friends for a month or so (whatever…zzzz), I couldn’t responded to the message thread which by the was a chaotic commotion as everyone was chatting there (damn jealous! Hahaha!). I could only responded to the Event section that Praveen created. I didn’t really give an ultimatum because I wasn’t decisive whether I should go there or not?!
Feasting on the delicious chicken Mamak soup at Pelita, USM! Ahhh…splendid Penang life! Khirwan however, refused to be let photographed! I guess some people refuse to succumb to cam-whoring? (,”)
I mean, travelling all the way from Selangor to Penang??? And I was a bit indecisive also whether is it going to be a worthy journey? Will my friends be the same persons I knew? Will they change into some sarcastic people? I know it is corny, bizarre, childish….whatever, but I can’t deny that I was having that dreading feeling as well because from past experience of meeting an old friend; and when I cracked some good-old-childish-jokes that we used to always be tickled about or laughed at, I was told of to “grow up”! I was stupefied by that comment and eversince that, I had this impression of that – NEVER ASSUME OLD FRIEND TO BE THE SAME ONE YOU KNEW. ALWAYS TREAT THEM LIKE NEW PERSONS.
Me, Desmond, Hildfi, Fauzi & Praveen. Raghu’s pic was not captured by the McD worker “uncle”! Haha!
But, in the end I thought – “Why not? Just take the chance. After all, it is not everyday we have Penang Free School 2001 so-called get-together/semi reunion, no?” So, made up my mind that yesterday after Friday Prayer around 3.30 p.m., I sped off my car straight to Penang! It was circa 8.00 p.m. when I arrived in Penang Island. As usual, the traffic was congested like hell (It was Friday!) but I managed to squeeze and “weaseled” my car straight to Georgetown; hoping to get a hotel. Well, what do you expect for a walk-in spontaneity during end-of-year season?? All hotels – the likes of Tune Hotel, Sunway Hotel, Vistana Hotel, etc were all fully booked!! Initially I didn’t want to bug any friends or relatives (wanted to stay in hotel) but seemed like I had no choice; I did plan to go back straight to Jitra (so far!) but then I thought of Khirwan!
Dreaded of disturbing him but in the end I just had to brave myself. He, of course was willingly to let me spend a night but so happened that he was studying for an exam (apparently compulsory for insurance agent!). So, off I went to Taman Desa Permai Indah which is by the way, opposite Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), my old university! As usual, we chatted and caught up with each other and went out to Pelita to have supper. Been ages since I last ate the chicken soup – I always drank/ate the soup during those USM night outings with Kat, Efy, Zizan and all after karaokeing! Hahahaha! Miss those days! It was fun to see all the commotion in Pelita, again – and the waiter was friendly and helpful this time; he even helped to carry our helmets! Good customer service! Hahaha Kudos!
Busy feasting on luncheon? Hehehe…
So, this morning had breakfast (again!) at Pelita (Roti canai & teh tarik! Splendid Penangite style) and then around noon went to McDonald’s Greenlane for the get-together. The traffic was very congested and I thought I was late! Arrived around 12.40 p.m. and saw Hilfi & Fauzi sitting at the alfresco part of the McDonald’s. After that, Praveen and Raghu came by and Desmond Foo came around 1.50 p.m (I thought of going back already as I had to push off from Penang all the way to Serendah! Hahaha!). It was fun chatting with those guys and it felt like we were in school again; except 12 years (WHAT??!) apart! Hahahaa…! After that Pik Jian & Yoges came along after attending a wedding.
Although not many people turned up due to distance and all but I am glad I did. And I am happy to know that my initial prejudice that my school mates have changed or evolved into snobbish people are totally rubbish and wrong! Hahaha! Glad to meet you guys and it was worthy. Old Frees’ forever. Amin (,”)
One for the nostalgia. Yoges, me, Pik Jian, Raghu, Praveen, Fauzi, Desmond & Hilfi.
