As a teacher, I am a multifaceted. People who don’t know me or never see me teach always assume me as this “cute little childlike who undeniably well-loved by pupils for being such a dear teacher” (Hahaha!). Why, even some of the relatives who have that image I play as this soft-spoken childlike always tease me that. Of course you won’t show your real uncouth side in front of your relatives, wouldn’t you? Of course you will feign the “soft-and-sweet-and-respect-the-elder” mannerism while you are mingling with them, no? Hahahaha! Only my colleagues know how I conduct the classes – Being roped as one of the Discipline Teachers for 4 consecutive years; you have to use your BRAIN how I am in the school, isn’t it? *wink*
I am a kind and lovable teacher. But I am also a stern one. My concept is like playing a kite. Let it go slowly so that the kite will fly higher; but once it is almost out of reach, I’ll snap and grab the rope back in my hand, ferociously. That is the first lesson every time a new class is about to start and getting to know me. I always give them the ‘dramatic overture’ :
“I am crazy. Why? Because I have two sides. I can be a cute, lovable person that you like,; smiling at you like ‘Siti Di Alam Fantasi’ or Mickey Mouse from Heaven; and I can be a devilish, cruel teacher you hate the most in the school like Freddy Krueger from Hell. So, the choice is yours. If you listen to my instructions, you’ll be safe.”
Which one do you want me to be for the whole year? A good Mickey Mouse or an evil Freddy Krueger? LOL! But I seriously said this.
That is why I was so fused with anger when I saw a viral video about a fat Indian Singaporean boy talking back to his patient teacher!! Such an insolent outrageous act! It was first shared by my former primary school teacher, Mr Ong Jun Hao and I then shared it in my own Facebook wall . The boy was told to sit but chose to ignore what the teacher said. Understandably, the teacher shouted to the boy, demanded him to sit (I understood that psychology because in a class, teacher HAS to show authority so that pupils won’t go overboard. Leniency can be embroidered within the practices but one has to show WHO’S THE BOSS so that the class can be controlled)!! The boy was furious and talked back to the teacher :
“What????! You think I am deaf, ahhh?”
WOW!!!!!! I was surprised with the arrogance!!! And I saluted the teacher as he actually apologized to the pupil for shouting at him but kept asking him to sit down subtly. Well, of course the boy paid no heed. He kept on blabbing, talking back and shouted to teacher and up to the point of even uttering some sexual innuendos!! But I really respect the teacher. He kept apologizing for like 5 times (I guess) but subtly asked the boy to sit but proved to no avail.
Angry Singaporeans condemning the fat rude boy. I concur!
The viral video sparked Singaporean public outcry, condemning the attitude of that fat rude boy – which I 100% agree. I wonder what is the subsequent episodes of this case. Some commentators were speculating that this rude boy is a son of a VVIP. Sheesh, I this is true, rot to the core!! You know, that is the reality in schools. Public and society is given merely a preview of what lies beyond the school walls and they got ‘a shock of their lives’ but it is just a tip of the iceberg. Imagine how we teachers have to weather more that 100++ kids with various attitudes? God knows.
The reality. So sad.
Teaching is fun; imparting knowledge to younger generation gives satisfaction one can’t describe. Nevertheless, to really nurture the pupils in terms of educating and moulding them in terms of good etiquette and morality; there are so many obstacles created by the men themselves. Why? There are so many ‘psychology rules’ and other trivial shenanigans; and with the Sweden’s laws which ‘protect’ children from the hard loves approach of spanking or beating to discipline, I have to say that the present generation is getting rather spoilt. Call me old-fashion; but I believe in old school approach – hard love.
But then of course; put these bureaucracy shenanigan aside; teaching is a satisfying job especially when it also compensates the ‘religious/piety side’ as Islam believes that the knowledge that one imparted to another soul will act as a continuous blessings for the original teacher in the AfterLife; as per what has been told by Rasulullah SAW :-
“When a man dies, his good deeds come to an end except three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge and righteous offspring who will pray for him.” [SahihMuslim: 3084]
As I do not have ongoing Sadaqah that I can vividly acknowledge or a child/offspring of my own that I can nurture to become a good Moslem, I rely on my role as a teacher to spread ‘beneficial knowledge’. Amin.
So now the question is – how to rectify the situation, in that case this rude boy? I guess after all, Singaporean teachers also face the same scenario like Malaysian teachers. With the interference of parents and Ministry of Education, everything is all messed up! Will all the ‘psychology shits’ alleviate the case; or a good spank or a subtle cane do the justice? Judging from the viral video, I opt for the latter, seriously.
Justin, the fat boy goes viral.
