So, this is it! Done with the skull-cracking session after the whole week concentrating on it. I just finished presented my topic on “Structuration Theory” for the “Communication Theory” subject tonight. Geez, what a mind-boggling for me! Hahhaa, I know that perhaps friends who are already holding doctorate in various fields will find this amusingly trivial and funny; but for a person who is just crawling in the Masters’ Degree, it is a huge deal! Hahaha!
My slide show!
Initially, my turn was supposed to be on 1st of April but an Iranian coursemate said she couldn’t present due to her New Year celebration (I guess it’s the Baha’i celebration Nawruz of which my friend Naveen Raj is celebrating as well); so Professor Salleh opted my name instead. I thought, what the heck – just get it over and done, right? So, for the whole week I have been butchering myself trying to decipher the concept. On surface I do understand but as I fathomed deeper into the modified version of the theory and its application in researches, my brain gone haywire! Well, I will elaborate more on that later.
Lame, I know. But just a teaser symbolizing the concept of “Duality Of Structure” from the theory. Hahaha. I am not sure if my coursemates caught the idea. Oh, well (,”)
I was the last person out of 4 people to present today; as the other 2 students were absent (Hurmm!). So, of course I had to masquerade my nervousness and just did my ‘thang’! Hahahah! For the confusing parts, I just simply read the texts in my Power Points whereas for the easy parts, I just rambled elaborate them exaggeratedly (like usual!). Hhahaa! Well, camouflage is important, no?
The man behind “Structuration Theory”. Baron Anthony Giddens!
You guys might be wondering what is “Structuration Theory” right? Well, a little bit teaser – It is actually a theory built by British well-known sociologist named Baron Anthony Giddens (Yes, he was awarded this ‘life peerage’ of something – I HAD to do coverage on the founder of theory. That’s why I know! LOL!). He defied the existing theories prior to 1984 with his publication “The Constitution of Society” and with the principle of “The Duality Of Structure”, he concocted theory of that the social reproduction or action is the result of a marriage between structure (rules) and agency/agent (human’s choices). He says that structure and agency can’t operate alone; they have to work hand-in-hand. His theory has become fundamental base in many researches in Information System Development & Management Accounting.
Feigning a smile. To masquerade the nervousness. Haha!
Professor Salleh questioned me during Q & A of which I just rambled with poor examples (by using a vulgar word, no less! Hahah! He just smiled deviously. LOL!) but it was purely for academic purpose :-
“How can you relate the theory with a situation in a class?”
And, the answer is (of which I will cement in my skull!) :-
” For example, when you wanna select someone to become a monitor, there are certain criteria (rules or structure) that you already enlist so that an individual could be elected as a monitor. So, when the monitor left the class; let say for next semester for instance; you will select other people WITH THE SAME CRITERIA/STRUCTURE to accommodate the demand of the system.”
Wow, I never thought it was that easy. So, typically, me; I added to the discussion and Proffesor Salleh agreed :
“So, professor. Can we take this example for instance. Supposedly, when someone to present a case, he was not supposed to be dressing up casually like this, right? (Referring to my t-shirt & tracksuit); he was supposed to be dressing properly and that is the STRUCTURE. So, by me wearing this, I am defying the structure and hence, I become an agent/agency, am I right?”
“Remember, Structuration Theory is all about the two things. Structure & Agent – hand in hand.” – And I make my coursemates to repeat it for like 3 times. They must be like rolling eyes. We are not primary school children! Hahhahaa! Oh, well. (,”)
On whole, I felt relieved it was over. But I haven’t read for tomorrow’s “Communication Research Methods” test!!! Urgh..Wanna wake up early and do readings for the whole day in UPM tomorrow! Night, y’all!
