After approximately more than 4 weeks with no weekends as I was so busy with professional activities and everything, FINALLY had a nice relaxing weekend. Well; obviously other than spending quality time with each other, we catch up with movie scenes! Haha! So, today I had the opportunity to watch the 3rd installment of “The Hunger Games” and the final chapter is divided into 2 films ala Harry Potter, entitled – “The Hunger Games : Mockingjay Part 1”.
The primary film poster.
Kakak is an avid fan as she has read and even owned all the three books; while I was just the aficionado for the films franchise. My review? The film was somewhat quite draggy with a lot of dialogue scenes which I am sure that action movie fans found it quite soporific and mundane but there were a few captivating scenes which really lifted up the spirits but the excitement didn’t last that long. Jennifer Lawrence was good and proved her Oscar-worthy but I think that the director failed to explore her real talents.
Katniss and Gale.
But anyway, I wasn’t going to give the normal E!News-kinda review. I am writing this because apart the dull narrative put aside, I have to say I was so CAPTIVATED by the essence of Communication aspects contained in the movie – which obviously derived from the book! As I am now pursuing Master’s Degree in Corporate Communications, everything I see now is always analyzed from the perspective of Communications, and I love it!
Plutarch (Philip Seymour Hoffman) & President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore).
I was so enthralled with how eminent the aspect of Public Relations confined in the gist of the movie! The aspect of Propaganda as we know, is one of the powerful branch in Public Relations Communication and has been utilized as a tool by many iconic figures in the history to evoke the spirit within the mass of the nations; for example like Adolf Hitler for German, President Mao for China and many more. I was aware about this during my “Public Speaking for Professionals” class by my favourite lecturer, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muati who opened up my vision about persuasive speeches done by these iconic figures in order to change the minds and behaviours of their people & also the “Advanced Public Relations” by Dr. Ain. In order to change the minds and behaviour of people, there were teams elected to construct such images that able to gain sympathies and supports from the public mass and such things were constructed from all aspects :-
- the wordings of the script;
- the speech delivery;
- the tones and the enunciation of the words;
- the displayed public image;
- the posters;
- the publicity stunts; and many more!
In this movie, we could see how Plutarch (the late Philip Seymour Hoffman), together with President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore) tried to create a propaganda approach to burn the rebellious spirit among the people of Panem by trying to create Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) as the Mockingjay, a symbol for the rebellion movement. This process involves how to display Katniss’s images to the public so that people of Panem are convinced to join the movement. We could see involvement of Public Relations here where Katniss was asked to deliver scripted text or acted in line with the propaganda mission with certain outfit to match the vision. Next, we could also see how the video presentations broadcast to the whole Panem showing Katniss mourning for the loss of lives in District 7 and 13 were able to evoke spirit of revolution among the people of Panem and Capitol did counterback by broadcasting the brain-washed Peeta making statements contradictory to what Katniss represented for. This is a reflection to what happened in reality; where Governments usually use mainstream mass media to solidify their presences and to embed in the minds of public that they are the reigning power WHILE the alternative wing usurped the attention of public mass via alternative media such as social sites and telecommunications!
Apart from that, I am also interested to see how President Snow had asked his scriptwriter to ‘alleviate’ the usage of “terrorists” or “criminals” into “radicals” in his public speech to people of Panem on regards of the rebellious movement led by President Coin and Katniss. This is all parts of Public Speaking element in public; and how you want to convince public with your words. Excellent!
Initially, I thought I was the only one noticed the whole Propaganda a.k.a. Public Relations element in it but when I Googled for the pictures, I saw a few other articles in the Net that really echoes my thoughts as well! It is now crystal clear that the production as well as the gist of the movie really use the essence of Propaganda (I am right!). This film poster was decorated ala Propaganda posters; not depicting the main protagonists but rather the peripheral characters representing people of districts in Panem. This is what propaganda to evoke revolutions look like!!!! BRAVO!
Yes, this could be a dull review which is not my usual E!News style when I write about Hollywood movies but I just can’t help it. I am so into Communications now! (,”)
