At last, the result for this whole traumatic and suffocating 3rd semester (February 2015-June 2015) is finally accumulated. With two ‘killer subjects’ and one elective (and my Research Paper!), I managed to secure :-
- Theory & Practices of Corporate Communication a.k.a. TPCC (B+);
- Organizational Communication (A); and
- Principles of Advertising (A)
As predicted, the “superkiller subject” which is TPCC is quite a difficult subject for me to score. Getting a B+ is actually quite OK given the fact that a lot of my coursemates lamented that last semester, their results were brutally disparaged with mere B and below when they were working their assess off for the tedious assignments. My coursemates felt under-appreciated. And what about me? Should I lie? Hahaha! Honestly when I took the compulsory subject at the beginning of the 3rd semester; I have already set my mental straight that I was not hoping for absolute victory of “A” for this class – given the fact of all the disheartened experiences that my coursemates shared prior to the class; as well as from my own observation.
For the first subject ever during my Master’s Degree, I have adopted the “Que Sera, Sera” motto! Contradict to my usual vigorous “Kiasu” approach.
I remembered that for the first 5 weeks when the 3rd semester commenced, I was so ‘amorous’ and full of enthusiasm to focus on TPCC’s 1st assignment (somehow, I have this childlike hope of that ‘miracles do happen’!). I became so compulsively obsessed with TPCC whereas by right, I should already started doing the draft of my Research Paper! There was one time my coursemate, Bad advised me to not focusing on TPCC alone because in the end, the marks will not do any justice to the efforts or attempts done for the subject. Initially, I thought it was nothing but as time went by, I agreed with her. Seemed like we were never good enough to meet the ‘high expectation’. In the end, I recoiled a bit and for the first subject for this WHOLE MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAMME, I just use the layback “Que Sera, Sera” motto (Whatever Will Be, Will Be) – a contradictory to my usual “Kiasu” (Hate Losing a.k.a. competitive spirit).
Hahaha! That is me! I am Kiasu. And the spirit is in flame so vigorous as I am doing my Master’s Degree now.
As the calendar entered March-May which is usually the busiest period in a year for a Malaysian teacher (endless clerical workloads, data key-ins, examinations, SISC+ endless sessions, observations by School Administrations, Additional Sports Day + Sports Day, Teacher’s Day, etc); the assignments for TPCC started to crack my nerves (REFER to https://undomiel84.wordpress.com/2015/03/22/the-torn-commitment-between-school-university-my-all-hysterical-pieces-of-me/) :-
- 2nd Assignment : To discuss corporate communication practice in sport tourism industry in Malaysia;
- 3rd Assignment : Comparative analysis of the practice of corporate communication in 2 private universities
Our lecturer prefers us to get PRIMARY DATA, as in we have to interview persons-in-charge in order to do all these assignments. So, you could imagine the headache for us the working people who have to juggle with the workload as well as make ourselves amenable to interview some Corporate Communication personnel. AND NOT TO MENTION that the attempts to secure interviews usually turned in vain – being rejected by corporate entities as we are just ‘students doing assignments’ were somewhat frustrating.
The Boxxtomoi team. Abang Musaddik Zainuddin & Miss Sharifah Hazwani “Adexx”. Thanks for your time and helping me out with assignment with the information and the time. I really appreciate.
Anyway, you guys can read how I managed to come up with Muay Thai as my sports subject for Sports Tourism (REFER to https://undomiel84.wordpress.com/2015/04/28/the-powerful-liaisons-of-facebook-the-world-of-sports-tourism-kom-5317-boxxtomoi-the-blood-sweat-of-malaysian-muay-thai-championships-organizer/). Thanks so much to the owner of Boxxtomoi, Abang Musaddik Zainuddin and Miss Sharifah “Adexx” for willingly accommodating the time for my questions albeit the whole sessions were via Facebook. Honestly, I liked the write-up but I think I screwed this assignment as I was focusing more on the international scenes of Sports Tourism (FIFA Germany, Barcelona Olympics, etc) and dedicated only a small portion on the local scene which was Muay Thai – which by right should go vice versa. I remembered that I had little time to really refurbish the assignment and in the end, resort to whatever may come – although as much as I felt that the subject was precious as not many people fathomed the uniqueness of Muay Thai. My prediction is that for that 20 marks allocated for this assignment, I did not fare well. And that what really plunged me into B+, I guess. Still, I am quite proud with the assignment as I have learned quite a lot of things from it.
The debonair Mr M.Zul and I. Thanks Sha for the help! I still owe you something! Hehhehe! Thanks babe! And thanks Mr. M.Zul for your hospitality.
The 3rd assignment was even dramatic. You guys can read it via https://undomiel84.wordpress.com/2015/04/29/slithers-out-from-the-mess-of-theory-practices-of-corporate-communication-a-comparative-study-between-kuala-lumpur-metropolitan-university-college-klmuc-infrastructure-university-k/. Thanks to my dear coursemate Sha who has been pulling a lot of strings to get the interview with Mr. M.Zul of KLMUC, my teammate Ajie and I managed to gather the information and presented the assignment within merely 5 days of preparation! Crazy, isn’t it? Still, when we finished presented the assignment, we literally jumped and hugged as we finally made it! Hahahaha!
So, on whole, what do I feel about TPCC? I am quite grateful because the grade could be worse but at the same time, you are left in questionable dark because we were not given our accumulation of ‘carry marks’ and our Final Exam was done A WEEK after the last week of lectures. In the part of the students, we PAY to get the knowledge and of course the recognition (certificate), so the ounce of knowledge imparted should be equivalent. But yes, I did have the gleam of hope at least to secure A- so that the Master’s Degree transcript will be nothing but only the ‘A’ alphabets. Nevertheless, it is what is. I felt like I did OK for the other assignments and even the Final Exam was OK for me; so my hunch says that the part plunging me down was probably the ‘Muay Thai’ asisgment. But still, Alhamdulillah.
During the preliminary part of Organizational Communication assignment.
Our assignment – The Comparative Study Of New Media (in the end we chose WhatsApp) & Conventional Media (Telephone) Within Department of Information.
For Organizational Communication, this was another ‘killer’ subject. But I was lucky to have such a great team (Emerald Group) consisted of Abang Naim, Najmi, Che Mat & Mat Ley who were so dedicated. They also understood my commitment as a teacher and since they are doing this full-time, they took over most of the hands-on (interviewing session) and I contributed in the translation and also presentation parts. The lectures also were somewhat quite technical where one had to provide examples to illustrate the concepts. But I had great time in the class and also we had the opportunity to visit L’Oreal Malaysia as organizational site visit as the Mid-Term test replacement (REFER to https://undomiel84.wordpress.com/2015/04/30/the-experiential-educational-site-visit-learning-loreal-paris-malaysia-sdn-bhd-an-organizational-communication-kom-5315-insight-of-a-global-cosmetics-conglomerate/). It was absolutely nice to have an insight on the local branch of a global conglomerate. I have to say that I was stressed for this subject but getting an “A” mollified all the angst and anxiety (REFER to https://undomiel84.wordpress.com/2015/06/16/the-plight-of-personal-paradox-a-kiasu-competitiveness-is-self-mutilation-the-story-of-stress-burn-out/)!
Nice site-visit to L’Oreal Malaysia Sdn. Bhd at Uptown Damansara.
For Principles of Advertising, the class had always been the most fun and enjoyable one (perhaps because I have passion in it as it has close affiliation with my interest on pop cultures and media). The lecturer was cool and generous in sharing knowledge with us. I had great time doing the assignments :-
- Assignment 1 : Pick an advertisement – I chose Beyonce’s “Mirror” – and discuss why you are drawn to the advertisement. (REFER to https://undomiel84.wordpress.com/2015/04/03/beyonce-a-grown-wman-in-pepsi-max-life-for-now-advertisement-campaign-the-academic-discussions-principles-of-advertising-kom-5323/);
- Assignment 2 : Pick an issue in advertisement from 5 journals and discuss – I chose issues in celebrity endorsements in advertising. (REFER to https://undomiel84.wordpress.com/2015/05/08/kom-5323-principles-of-advertising-2nd-presentation-the-wrath-of-vampire-effect-the-effect-charms-of-canto-pop-idols-issues-of-celebrity-endorsement-in-advertisement/);
- Assignment 3 : Present a proposal as an advertising agency on how you want to promote and position the brand of the product assigned to your agency – My group, Avant Garde Inc. chose to promote Dry Shampoo that we named “Cleanse” (REFER to https://undomiel84.wordpress.com/2015/05/08/kom-5323-principles-of-advertising-2nd-presentation-the-wrath-of-vampire-effect-the-effect-charms-of-canto-pop-idols-issues-of-celebrity-endorsement-in-advertisement/).
1st assignment on “Principles of Advertising”. I talked about Beyonce’s “Mirror” for Pepsi Max.
2nd assignment on Issues of Celebrity Endorsement in Advertisement.
To say, it was an easy is absolutely absurd. For me, there are no easy subjects. Each subject needs a lot of hardworks. But I guess, maybe because I already took “Integrated Marketing Communication” in the 2nd semester, I had a few basic knowledge on advertising principles (but not the practical! I have learned a lot of things from my other knowledgeable coursemates along the way. That’s the benefits of having a group work!).
3rd assignment as advertising agency (Avant Garde Inc.) that promoted and positioned a dry shampoo called “Cleanse” in the Malaysian market.
I guess although this 3rd semester proved to be a roller-coaster ride for me as I had to juggle with my responsibility as a Malaysian primary school teacher (too much clerical stuffs!), I have also gained new experiences along the way.
Presenting the first half of my Research Paper. Still an amateur but I am learning the babysteps. I have the positive spirit that one day, I can master the arts of being a researcher. In fact, I HAVE TO MASTER that if I want to crystallize my aspiration to be a lecturer, Insya ALLAH.
I managed to present the first part my Research Paper (Chapter 1-3) which is “Malaysian Moslems’ Perception Towards Cadbury’s Image Repair & Its Halal Image” on 10th June 2015 (REFER to https://undomiel84.wordpress.com/2015/06/10/my-research-paper-presentation-chapter-1-3-academic-discussion-on-malaysian-moslems-perception-towards-cadburys-image-repair-its-halal-image-faculty-of-modern-language-commun/) and had an insightful academic question-and-answer sessions there. A new experience for me in the world of Communication!
Thanks to my coursemates for the opportunity to be a moderator.
Apart from having the experience entering L’Oreal Malaysia, I also blessed to be given opportunity by my coursemates to become moderator for The 2nd Annual PR Seminar 2015 : “To Have Or Not To Have? Understanding The PR Roles In Social Media” (REFER to https://undomiel84.wordpress.com/2015/05/19/becoming-a-moderator-for-pr-seminar-2015-to-have-or-not-to-have-understanding-the-pr-roles-in-social-media-calc-hall-fakulti-bahasa-moden-komunikasi-upm-its-a-new-soundtrack-i/). To be able to moderate a session with distinguished panels such as :-
- YBhg. Dato’ Ibrahim Abdul Rahman – The Director of Department of Information & President of Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM);
- Lizz Kamaruddin – The Senior Manager, Group Strategic Communication of PETRONAS.
- Hans Isaac – Malaysian top actor, producer, entrepreneur, etc.
– was absolutely ethereal experience. And I also was in awe seeing my coursemates like Najmi, Bad, Ereen, Hilya and Kak Bed working their assess off to organize the event. They were the backbones of the seminar. Congratulation guys, and thanks for the opportunity and embraced me in for this new experience.
With the panels.
On whole, having a “B+” for TPCC does somehow ruin my all “As” record in my Master’s Degree transcript but pondering back, given the fact that this 3rd semester was really a hectic one and I also managed to add a few new feathers of experiences on my hat, I’d say that this semester was not at all a loser one. I can vouch that this 3rd semester was quite a kaleidoscope, and I am excited for more to come!
My result for this 3rd semester : 2 “A”s and 1 “B+”.
