After ages of abstinence, I finally get to watch the Academy Awards! As the Tinseltown freak (I personally think if there is a subject called Hollywood Cinema 101, I can nail a perfect “A”!!), this is the zenith of the year where you’ve got to see the Hollywood honchos, right from the leading silverscreen actors to the behemoth behind the cameras such as editors, cinematographer, director, etc being acknowledged. Getting a cable TV network HBO as I now reside in my own crib enabled me to rekindle with this.
Winner of Best Picture – Oscar 2016.
I think I’ve said this thousand times! I remember those days when I was still living with my parents – I forced myself to wake up early just to watch the event LIVE – but after becoming a working adult, it seems impossible to witness the event LIVE – BUT; my fanaticism never wither; I even feigned an emergency leave when I was working as banker in AFFIN Bank in 2008 just to watch the event LIVE! Hahhaha!
Chris Rock as the emcee. Was the choice is to counter the racism controversy?
The controversy that swirls Oscar buzz this year is none other than the racism cards cried by the black community helm by Jada Pinkett Smith who was furious for the none nomination of coloured actors – which of course referring to black community. I have noticed that when Black community cries “racism for the coloured people”, it only means Black People and that excludes Asians, Micronesians, etc. Sure, Hollywood is racist especially with the White Supremacy but do you think Jada Pinkett will boycott Oscar if Will Smith were to be nominated irregardless the non-existence Asians being nominated? HELL, NO! Haha! I guess The Academy tries to counter this sentiment by appointing Chris Rock as the Emcee. He sure knows how to address the issues in comical manners but sharp words!
The transition. From pretty face pin-up actor to SERIOUS actor. Thumbs up for his brilliant choices!
Best Picture for this year’s Oscar is “Spotlight’, a biographical drama chronicles on sexual predatory by numerous priests. I am excited to watch this and seeing Rachel Mc Addams getting involved with this project which is a far cry from her breakout role as the Queen Bee Bitch in “Mean Girls” is very fulfilling. As movies aficionado, it is incredible to see familiar faces transcend from mediocre “bubble-gum” roles into serious actors – you clearly can put Anne Hathaway, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence in this category.
Stunning Brie Larson wearing Gucci.
Brie Larson wins Best Actress In Leading Role via “Room”. Sure, she was the contender for the category during this awards season but as an underdog, she was not the favorite. Still, you can see her personality whenever correspondents interviewed her. In fact, she is still experiencing jet-lag when she attends the Oscar as she flew all the way from Vietnam! Unexpected win but well-deserved. Another anticipating film I want to watch.
Raving performance in “Room”.
The clear winners for production and technical designs are those from “Mad Max” (winning 6 categories!). I can vouch that as one of the movie-goers. When you watch the movie, you can’t help but feeling awed with the eclectic and eccentric elements of the costumes; not to mention the flamboyant colours and production styles! It is sort of like a hybrid of Goth and Halloween!
The man of the night. Finally!
And of course, Oscar 2016 is Leonardo DiCaprio’s night. It has been a long journey since “Titanic” catapulted his status as A-lister. But you guys remember, he did star in some “teensy films” in the late 90s such as “The Beach”, “Romeo + Juliet”. Nevertheless, after the “Titanic” fame, I guess Leo started to mould himself into serious actor and his choices were often accentuated by artsy filmhouses and renowned directors – most notably under the wings of Martin Scorsese :-
- “Gangs Of New York”;
- “The Aviator”;
- “Django Unchained” ;
- “The Great Gatsby”;
- “The Wolf of Wall Street”
– and many more (I only remember these). And finally, the Oscar is his via “The Revenant”!! Of course, everyone is so immersed with Leo’s speech (he is an ecology staunch activist) and bedazzled with his good looks and endless romances with beautiful models (remember Bar Rafaeli and Gisele Bunchen??). But for all of us the “serious movie aficionados” (lol), we simply are enthralled by his brilliant movie choices. I guess he is like Howard Hughes, the playboy reclusive Hollywood tycoon of whom Leo himself portrayed in “The Aviator”. Hughes had flings with tonnes of Hollywood bevy of beauties with the likes of Ava Gardner, Katherine Hepburn and Jean Harlow!!!
Apart from weathering the cold weather, Leo ate raw bison meat! The dedication for the role. Immense!
And definitely the affiliation of Oscars with fashion never wavered. I bet the self-acclaimed fashion polices were inspecting what these Oscar attendees were wearing, especially for the actresses. I guess Cate Blanchett dazzles among all with her Armani Prive. Awesome!
The queen of the dress. Voila! Cate Blanchett wearing Armani Prive.
