This is weird. I never actually write anything about my cats in this blog, didn’t I? I mean, I will mostly write about my personal life and people who I appreciate the most but I never write about my cats when they actually play quite pivotal role in my life. Hahaha! I remember that I did write about a stray sick kitten that I found in my house compound circa May 2013. It suffered from major sclerosis and bad skin. Tried to help it and went to see the Vet but it was too late. I felt sad for the late Sooty (REFER TO : https://undomiel84.wordpress.com/2013/05/14/inalillah-waiting-to-exhale-the-death-of-sooty-the-stray-black-cat/). I know this must sound pathetic, but what to do? I write everything in my blog; although some are embroidered with innuendos and implicit emblems. So….. (,”)
Oscar & Duchess when they first arrived at my house circa June 2013. I love my cats BUT not to the extend of assuming them as my kids! I mean… it’s weird when people dub them as “my fur kids” or “congratulating for the kitten”. I love them, but not that obsess of calling myself “”father/papa/daddy”…. eeeeek! No, no, no! Hahah!
Anyway, back to the real story. My colleague, Kak Mawar and her husband Abang Man who are both cats-lover with no less than 10 cats (circa 13 cats!) wanted to let go two “teenager” cats (4 months old) because they were so playful and kept disturbing other newborn kittens. In the end Kak Mawar decided to let go although the male cat was quite attached with the family. She asked me whether I wanted the cats or not since I have been endlessly joking about wanting one of her cats. I thought about it for couple of days due to a few of possible problems arisen if I were to rear cats because :
So skinny, around Ramadhan 2013, I think.
- I have quite a busy social lifestyle (not the scandalous one; more like leisure time activities) and rarely at home;
- What about the smell as cats surely smell??!;
- The cost of cages, foods, litter sand, etc???;
- How to train them poo and pee in the litter sand as I barely had any experience?
Duchess. Quite pompous and “jual mahal”. She only got attached after her libido struck! LMAO! Hahaha!
Now, since I already had a cat cage (bought it to put Sooty, the demised kitten in it) and had a few trips to pet shop (so basically I already had idea on where to buy cat food, etc), I thought – “why not?”. After all, my sister and I have been harbouring the dream of having pet cat since we were young but Mak prohibited due to us prone to cold/flu from the cats’ furs – so now, this is me, crystallizing the dream that I was shunned off (I know it sounded far-fetch but it’s true. The deliberation feeling was immense!) though I was a bit scared of not able to give commitment to take care of living creatures, you know (I mean, irregardless human or animals, these are God’s creatures! I don’t wanna be answerable in the AfterLife for neglecting responsibility to take care of these living creatures, right?)
In the end circa mid of June, I said “YES”. So, I took the cats home and renamed them from their previous name given by Kak Mawar (Hahaha, revamping!) to “Oscar” for the male & “Duchess” for the female (quite Anglicized names in comparison to the local ones gave by Kak Mawar). I have been learning a lot from Kak Mawar, FB friends and also blogs such as http://kucingutara.blogspot.com/ which happens to be one of the most informative blog on cats! TQ!
Duchess “on heat” phase. The mammary glands a.k.a. breasts already visible. This is zoology! No need to feel ashamed.
Around late October 2013, Duchess began to exhibit “on heat” symptoms. Luckily, I did some reading in the blogs about cats that I wasn’t shocked about it. She became more attached rather that aloof prior to that (Oscar was the friendlier one) and the “on heat” signal (aroused) trait was visibly exhibited where she flashed her vagina and wriggle seductively for male cats! LOL! I felt like a Zoologist! So happened that my Vet told me that it would not be good for Oscar to copulate with Duchess because they are sister-and-brother (Kak Mawar told me); incestious progeny is not healthy as the DNA chromosomes created are likely the same; therefore the resistant to illness will be frail. It is the same with human! I guess that is the rationale why Islam forbids incest. You know, God is Great! There will always be a rationale behind every prohibitions, no?
The first suitor – Silver Stranger Cat; semi-Persian with bushy fur and tail.
But then, obviously it was hard to separate the two as I allocate them in the store room (more spacious rather than cage) and they can climb ladder or old refrigerator there. Thus, the possibly of them copulating is high. But anyway, this game of Zoologist was kinda interesting for me (I guess once you are a Science; though a Microbiologist; student, the inquisitive nature is just eminent, isn’t it? Hahaha!). I was searching for a male cat to “fuck” (Hahaha!) Duchess but definitely not Oscar. Now, where could I find one?
The second suitor, Momo; Kak Nab’s grey-white male cat.
As if it was Game of Nature, suddenly there was this semi-Persian (I don’t know, but the fur was quite bushy!) silver cat roamed in front of my house. Hahhaaa! I purposely put Duchess there and she just did her seduction thing! Boy, the Silver Stranger Cat was struck! He just couldn’t stop trying to approach Duchess! Now, Oscar saw this and spontaneously chased it away (like a competitor in mating). Until that night, the Silver Stranger Cat kept circling my house wanting to “nail” Duchess! Wow, talk about the power of sexual nature! I deviously thought of getting the ‘seeds’ of Silver Stranger Cat. Who knows that maybe Duchess will have a beautiful fur silver kitten? So what I did was that I locked Oscar and then purposely “gave time” for Duchess and Silver Stranger Cat to copulate (under my car, nonetheless! Hahaha!). Seemed like it worked because after that Duchess licked her vagina (signifying that penetration occurred).
The third suitor is incestuous (eww, right?!) Oscar. Damn! Hahaha!
Still, I wasn’t sure. In the meantime, I knew that while I locked both Oscar and Duchess in the store, surely penetration took place.Therefore, I had to find another suitor if I wanted to see a healthy kitten, right? The next candidate would be Ustazah Zainab’s grey-white cat called Momo who always frequent my house as Kak Nab’s house was just opposite mine. Momo was a big cat and quite sturdy. He always sneaked into my house for food. So, I enticed him with food and locked him with Duchess. As usual, Duchess did her “thang” and Momo as well. But then, Momo didn’t seem vigorous. Could it be that he was already castrated/spayed/neutered? Furthermore, his body was quite fleshy which happened to be a trait normally occurred among neutered cat. I don’t know.
Yeps… after a months or two, Duchess hit the jackpot. Got pregnant….. by?? LMAO!
Hahaha! I felt like a PIMP! But anyway, after that; I anticipated to see the outcome of my experiment. Will Duchess be pregnant? Who is the father? I read in blogs and Internet that cats are special because they can deliver kittens from different father within on birth-labour! Therefore in terms of Duchess, she could give birth to either grey, silver or orange kittens as she already copulated with 3 male cats!
Duchess’s kittens! Whoa! Experiment works!
Around November, Duchess officially got pregnant. I had to leave them at a pet boarding house in Bandar Baru Bangi called “Micasa Pet Shop” for 14 days due to my Penang Bridge International Marathon Fun Run & after that flew to Sydney for 10 days! My Vet estimated that Duchess will give birth after Chinese New Year 2014 but I was shocked that around 24th December 2013 (Christmas Night! Luckily I didn’t go out for any social rendezvous), I heard some “tiny cry” from the cage I put inside the store – a haven in case Duchess to give birth. Could it be but impossible. And Duchess was licking her vagina like “after-poo” kinda thing.
A week-old. They grow up fast! This one most possibly fathered by either Silver stranger Cat or Momo. This one seemed a bit stronger than the rest; possibly because of inter-breeding with various types of chromosomes/DNA for antigen resistant, I think.
Suddenly, I saw two newly-born kittens still drenched with blood! Oh, damn! I had no experience to maneuver or manage this! So, I turned to FB and luckily the cat expertise gave me good advises and guidance! I shooed Oscar because I heard that male cat EAT newly-born kitten. Put Duchess in the big cage and just let her preoccupied herself with the kitten. Suddenly, I heard Duchess hissed and miaowed! I thought Oscar attacked her (but then he was outside!) so I hurriedly went there. Oh, man! She just gave birth to another kitten – altogether 3 kittens :-
Orange-white patch. Fathered by Oscar? A bit weak. Possibly due to intra-breeding? I don’t know.
- 1 silver-greyish-white (fathered by either Silver Stranger Cat or Momo);
- 1 orange-white patch (similarly uncanny with Oscar. He is the father!)
- 1 mostly orange (Kak Mawar & Abang Man said possibly followed the characteristic of mother, Duchess. Who is the father, then??)
So now, I have separated Duchess and kittens in the big cage and Oscar in a smaller cage on the old refrigerator. I had to separate them because Oscar always wanting to “procreate” with Duchess and this must be avoided because the mother will not care for the kittens anymore if she were to mate again. I don’t know; another 3 kittens mean another additional cost. I had this feeling of casting them away; and even had the wish that the newly-born kittens died (usually not many will survive) – which I know is a CRUEL emotion, right? I am ashamed to admit but I did have that.
The mostly orange. The weakest of all. I am sure this one is an incestious progeny. Hopefully, it can lasts.
But then, looking at those kittens, my heart fell for them. Aww..such cute kitties. In the end, I guess I will have to just keep them. Next thing is to neutered them – especially Duchess and Oscar!! No more breeding, please! I know it is going to be costly, but then people say that rearing cats will make your life more blessed. It’s like cats bring bless to the life of the owners. Well, it is not superstitious; I guess it’s more of appreciating animals and creatures created by ALLAH SWT. Furthermore, even Prophet Muhammad SAW reportedly had a cat named Muezza. According to http://www.deenislam.co.uk/cats.htm, this is an excerpt story about Muezza :-
“Our master Rasulillah (saw) advised the people to treat their cats (pets) as a member of their family, and by this he meant to take a good care of them. Not only by words, but also with his actions he was a very good role model. These exemplary behaviours became so popular that they turned to stories in time.
One of the most famous stories about them is Muezza, the Prophet Muhammad’s (saw) favourite cat, recounts the call to prayer was given, and as the story goes Prophet Mohammed (saw) went to put on one of his robes, he found his cat sleeping on one of the sleeves. Rather than disturbing the cat, he cut off the sleeve and let him sleep. When he returned, Muezzaawoke and bowed down to Prophet Muhammad and in return he stroked him three times. Another legend holds that the ‘M’marking on the forehead of the tabby was created by the prophet as he rested his hand lightly on the brow of his favourite cat.
It is also believed that when Prophet Muhammad (saw) gave sermons within his household he would often hold Muezza in his lap and he also drank from water previously drunk by his cat. He also did his ablutions from the same water that was drunk by a cat. He seemed to treat his cat in the same way as cat lovers do today but even cat lovers might think twice about drinking the same water that had been drunk by a cat for fear of transmission of disease from the cat’s saliva (but see below).
It is believed that you will suffer no harm if you drink from the cat’s water provided no impurities are seen in the cat’s mouth. In another story from the hadith, it is stated that a when a cat ate a pudding put down during prayers, the person who was in charge of the pudding ate from the same place as the cat and Prophet (s) said this was alright as the cat is not unclean and is “one of those who go around amongst us”.”
Apart from Prophet Muhammad SAW, another well-known figure in Islam who was famous for his adoration towards cats was `Abd al-Rahman ibn Sakhr Al-Azdi. He was one of Prophet Muhammad SAW’s famous companions (Sahabah) and famously known with his nickname “Abu Hurairah” which means – “Father of The Kittens”. There are stories about him and his cats that you find in the Internet.
Awww…. cats are cute animals! Rearing them can be a therapy. Hopefully their cuteness transpired to me, as well! Hahaha!
On whole, this is it. I have done my part in immortalizing the story of my cats. I guess, having pet cats is wonderful. They are cute, playful and loyal. Always like to rest in my lap and they know me as in they come to me when I call and even find way back home after wandering around. Cats are mythical creature, like me! Hahahaha! Miaow!!
